There is a new faculty position (open rank) for a nuclear chemist/radiochemist at the department of Physics and Applied Physics at UMass Lowell starting Fall 2020. This hire is to strengthen and broaden our Radiological Sciences program to include radiochemistry, nuclear chemistry and/or nuclear forensics research/teaching. UMass Lowell administration has committed significant infrastructure investment to support this direction. The successful candidate will have ~1500 sf of their own radiochemistry laboratory. with appropriate hoods, and vented glove boxes, to be completed prior to Fall 2021, as well as the opportunity to participate in and inform the design process. Dr. Shafer is seeking a post-doc. The project would focus on molten salt and materials chemistry of uranium, zirconium and lithium. The Department of Chemistry is seeking applicants for an assistant professor position with a focus on radiochemistry. A postdoctoral fellowship is presently available with the many-body nuclear dynamics group at Indiana University, Bloomington. The group conducts experimental research in low and intermediate energy nuclear reactions with an emphasis on the topic of near and sub-barrier fusion reactions using radioactive beams. To pursue our research we conduct experiments at various accelerator facilities worldwide including MSU-NSCL (Michigan State University) and GANIL (Caen, France). At Indiana University we design, construct, and test the detector and electronic systems that make these measurements possible. Upcoming approved fusion experiments at MSU-NSCL and GANIL are the present focus of the research program. The successful candidate will be expected to take the lead role in all aspects of group activities from execution of the experiments and analysis of the resulting data. Candidates are expected to have expertise in using modern nuclear instrumentation as well as experimental and data analysis techniques. A strong background in instrumentation is essential. In summary, the faculty position will begin in September of 2019. The successful applicant would be engaged in teaching and research in Health Physics and must possess the Ph.D. degree in Health Physics, Physics, or a closely related area. Excellent English communications skills are required, and the applicant must have demonstrated the ability to teach subject matter, at the graduate level, in health physics and to carry out research in this area (radiochemistry, nuclear forensics, and nuclear security are of particular interest), including having published research findings in technical reports or refereed scientific journals. The successful candidate will be expected to have a sound working knowledge of laboratory and field instrumentation used in measuring ionizing radiation, radioactivity analysis, external and internal radiation dosimetry, radiation shielding, and an active involvement in research. Qualifications:
Ph.D. in chemistry or equivalent is required, postdoctoral experience preferred. Applicants should have awareness of and sensitivity to educational goals of a multicultural population as might have been gained in cross-cultural study, training, teaching and other comparable experience.

Responsibilities:
Excellence in research and teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate level is expected. Research in radiochemistry with applications to biomedical, environmental, forensics or other fields that complement the current faculty in the department. The ideal candidate will be able to teach courses in inorganic, analytical chemistry and/or physical chemistry. Teaching duties may include upper division undergraduate lectures and laboratory courses, and graduate lecture courses. Some teaching in general and/or introductory chemistry may be required. The successful candidate will develop a robust research program engaging primarily undergraduate and graduate (M.S.) students. Candidate must demonstrate awareness and experience understanding the needs of a student population of great diversity – in age, cultural background, ethnicity, primary language and academic preparation – through course materials, teaching strategies and advisement.
